A basement photo checklist for an assessment enquiry

Capture context and changes over time without disturbing the basement or treating pictures as a diagnosis.

Start with the room context

Take a wide view showing the wall, floor edge and nearby window or service entry. Then take a closer view of the observed mark or crack. Keep both photographs in the same enquiry so the assessor can locate the close-up. If several walls are involved, give each location a simple label such as north wall beside the window. Avoid including people, documents, valuables or unrelated household details. Only send the information needed to describe the concern.

Keep repeat photographs comparable

When recording a change, photograph from approximately the same position and note the date. A fixed reference point helps explain where the change occurred. Describe what looks different instead of relying solely on the photograph: a wider mark, a new damp patch or a second location. Do not draw conclusions about structural safety from image comparison. Tell the assessor if you are uncertain about the timeline or if the mark was already present when you moved in.

Include the exterior context safely

A ground-level picture of the corresponding exterior area can show a window, downspout, walkway or access restriction. Explain how that picture relates to the basement location. Do not climb a roof, move heavy equipment or dig around the wall for an enquiry. If vegetation or a deck blocks the view, say so. The contractor can decide what further inspection is needed. Photographs support a conversation but cannot reveal every concealed condition or establish the correct repair.

Send a concise accompanying note

Summarize the location, what you observed, when it appears and any known past work. State whether the basement is finished and whether direct wall access is available. Add your preferred contact details and the questions you want the assessment to answer. Ask how additional images should be supplied rather than sending unnecessary personal material. The current form routes your details to the site operator and may share them with a local contractor; review the enquiry notice before sending.
